The first 18 holes of River Landing CC opened in June of 1996 as a private community just north of Wilmington, NC. The course was voted one of the Top Ten New Courses in North Carolina in 1996. The course has a mile of frontage on the N.E. Cape Fear River, which Johnston used for six holes. Mature timber, lakes, streams and freshwater wetlands help define the traditional design character of the golf course. A third nine holes of golf was completed in opened in the fall of 1999.
The fourth nine holes were completed in 2005 and opened in June
of 2006.
Located on N.C. Highway 41 one-fourth mile from I-40, River Landing is a private planned community of more than 1,000 acres. The project rests on an original boat landing where tobacco riverboats steamed up the river in the early 1900's.
The golf course also features a 10 foot high crescent shaped waterfall that connects two lakes that guard the eighteenth green. The par 3 sixth hole provides a scenic shot over a natural bend in the
Northeast Cape Fear river.
